17th Photograph is a documentary about the late Kurdish intellectual and writer, Mehmed Uzun, who wrote exclusively in the Kurdish language that has continued to be banned by Turkish authorities for decades. In his writings, Uzun helped to reveal and promote the richness of Kurdish language. 17th Photograph is based upon testimonies of many people who knew about Uzun’s life starting from his childhood in the town of Siverek, his prison life in Diyarbakir, and his escape to Syria, South Kurdistan (Iraq) and finally Sweden where he ended up as refugee.

This short work-in-progress documentary presents an overview of the multiple contradictions of the “North”: a North, which is a non-place, a place of harsh features, of frosty winters and sweltering summers, with a joyful green springs. The film tells the story of a lonely woman and the story of pain and devotion to homeland.  The men in the village where the documentary is set are all missing; there is no one except women: grandmothers, mothers, daughters. The women gather in joy and despair, supporting each other and hoping for better lives. Every place on the globe has its own “North” with its own characteristics….

Emine became a “kuma” (second wife) when she was 14 and her husband is her cousin. His first wife was also a cousin of his. In her marriage Emine was exposed to horrible violence and took shelter in her father’s house, however when her wounds healed it was her father who took her back to her husband. Being the second wife is a form of domestic violence in itself, and the women in this documentary describe their situations as “wearing the dress of death”. Emine now will never be able to speak as result of what she has suffered, but what about other women?

American Herro is the remarkable story of a woman who came to America as a young Kurdish refugee from Iraq and lives out the American dream. 30-years later, travelling the globe working as U.S. Diplomat, Herro Mustafa invites her first American friend, filmmaker Kirk Roos, to visit Iraq and retrace her steps to freedom.

This documentary is about Jamal Abdo, a Kurdish artist who was born in Western Kurdistan (Syria) and currently lives and works in Germany. Growing up on the Syrian-Turkish border made the partition of his country an everyday reality for him. The film shows how the viewer must break with conventional ways of perceiving things in order to understand his art which is made predominantly from egg shells.

This is the story of an old handicapped woman who must work hard every day just to survive. The filmmaker tries very hard to make a film about her but she refuses saying that her family will not allow her. It turns out however that there are other reasons.
