14 JULY

Tens of thousands of Kurds' and revolutionary people in Turkey were sent to jail following the military coup in Turkey on September 12, 1980. Kurds, imprisoned in Diyarbakir Prison, which is listed as one of the 10 worst prisons in the world, were subjected to vicious acts of torture. A group of Kurdistan freedom fighters started an unprecedented resistance protesting torture and prison conditions and to fight for their basic human rights and freedoms. As part of their resistance, they went on indefinite hunger strike on July 14, 1982.
