The bond between Najla and Sherko is a profound story of impossible love. Imposible because it is set during the time when Saddam Hussein;s regime were implementing policy of genocide against the Kurds. Sherko is a young Kurdish doctor who goes back Kurdistan to help victims of Saddam Hussein’s war against the Kurds. Najla is his classmate and girlfriend but belongs to an influential Arab family that has close ties with the fascist Ba’ath regime. Najla follows Sherko and returns to Kurdistan to find him. The Flowers of Kirkuk is based on true lives and events. Yet this is a story of courage and the power of love during the tragic course of history.
